James Mackey -
James Mackey is a retired Lecturer of Philosophy and Professor of Theology. Born in Waterford, he holds a doctorate in philosophy from Queens University and has taught various courses including ethics, human rights and philosophy of religion.
In 1979 he was appointed Thomas Chalmers Professor of Theology at the University of Edinburgh and held this chair for 20 years. In 1992 James organised an international conference for the City of Derry’s International Meeting Point for the Appreciation of Cultures (IMPACT 92) aimed at addressing the conflict in Northern Ireland in the context of influences to and from Europe and the USA. From this conference he introduced and edited a volume of papers entitled The Cultures of Europe: the Irish Contribution which was published in 1994.
In 2005 he served on the Independent Assessment Panel for the assessment of the Northern Ireland Policing Board and took special responsibility for the matter of Human Rights implementation.
